The widespread use of communication networks in computing systems in the last years and the implementation of complete systems on a chip has triggered the transition from single computer embedded systems to a network of embedded systems. Networked embedded systems are embedded systems with interesting wireline and wireless interfaces that can be implemented in a single board or chip. These systems are interesting because they are usually distributed embedded systems where the total design must include not only conventional hardware, software, but also networking ends, protocols, etc.
This special issue of ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing is focused on the state-of-the-art and recent advances in of networked embedded computing. We are looking into the various representative research directions that arouses when communication becomes as important as performance or power consumption. As a result, we encourage contributions targeting network awareness for embedded systems. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:
