    abstract = {{\textcopyright} 2017 ACM. Predicting the outcome of sports events is a hard task. We quantify this difficulty with a coefficient that measures the distance between the observed final results of sports leagues and idealized perfectly balanced competitions in terms of skill. This indicates the relative presence of luck and skill. We collected and analyzed all games from 198 sports leagues comprising 1503 seasons from 84 countries of 4 different sports: basketball, soccer, volleyball and handball. We measured the competitiveness by countries and sports. We also identify in each season which teams, if removed from its league, result in a completely random tournament. Surprisingly, not many of them are needed. As another contribution of this paper, we propose a probabilistic graphical model to learn about the teams' skills and to decompose the relative weights of luck and skill in each game. We break down the skill component into factors associated with the teams' characteristics. The model also allows to estimate as 0.36 the probability that an underdog team wins in the NBA league, with a home advantage adding 0.09 to this probability. As shown in the first part of the paper, luck is substantially present even in the most competitive championships, which partially explains why sophisticated and complex feature-based models hardly beat simple models in the task of forecasting sports' outcomes.},

    abstract = {{\textcopyright} 2017 Elsevier B.V. Device-to-device (D2D) communication will allow direct transmission between nearby mobile devices in the next generation cellular networks. A fundamental problem in multi-hop D2D networks is the design of forwarding algorithms that achieve, at the same time, high delivery ratio and low network overhead. In this work, we study group meetings' properties by looking at their structure and regularity with the goal of applying such knowledge in the design of a forwarding algorithm for D2D multi-hop networks. We introduce a forwarding protocol, namely GROUPS-NET, which is aware of social group meetings and their evolution over time. Our algorithm is parameter-calibration free and does not require any knowledge about the social network structure of the system. In particular, different from the state of the art algorithms, GROUPS-NET does not need communities' detection, which is a complex and expensive task. We validate our algorithm by using different publicly available data sources. In real-world large scale scenarios, our algorithm achieves approximately the same delivery ratio of the state-of-the-art solution with 40% less network overhead.},

    abstract = {{\textcopyright} 2017 IEEE. The recent exponential growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its mobile devices asks for the advancement of mobile networks technology. In such direction, current and next generations of cellular and vehicular networks foresees adhoc communication. In such paradigm, as entities are constantly moving, connections between them are intermittent and of little, if none, reliability. Recent studies have explored entities connections and how to design efficient ad-hoc communication algorithms for them. In this paper, using real mobility data, we study how and to what extent the entities mobility affects the network (global) and the entities (local) connectivity. We propose and leverage existing mobility metrics to capture both the depth and the spread of entities trajectories. Furthermore, we show how global connectivity is related to the depth of the trajectories, while local connectivity is related to the spread of the trajectories. Finally, as we use both human and vehicular mobility data, we discuss how their mobility nature can affect their mobility characteristics and connectivity.},

Motivation: The 1000 Genomes Project (1KGP) and thousands of Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) performed during the last years have generated an enormous amount of information that needs to be integrated to better understand the genetic architecture of complex diseases in different populations. This integration is important in areas such as genetics, epidemiology, anthropology, as well as admixture mapping design and GWAS-replications. Network-based approaches that explore the genetic bases of human diseases and traits have not yet incorporated information on genetic diversity among human populations. Results: We propose Disease-ANCEstry networks (DANCE), a graph-based web tool that allows to integrate and visualize information on human complex phenotypes and their GWAS-hits, as well as their risk allele frequencies in different populations. DANCE provides an interactive way to explore the human SNP-Disease Network and its projection, a Disease-Disease Network. With these functionalities, DANCE fills a gap in our ability to handle and understand the knowledge generated by GWAS and 1KGP. We provide a number of case studies that show how DANCE can be used to explore the relationships between human complex diseases, their genetic bases and variability in different human populations.},

    abstract = {Abstract In recent years, we have witnessed an increase in the popularity of mobile wireless devices and networks, with greater attention devoted to feasibility of opportunistic computing, sensing, and communication. In Mobile Social Networks (MSNs), communication is provided by spatial proximity and social links between peers, where personal devices carried by users communicate directly in a device-to-device mode. On one hand, human mobility provides encounters between peers and opportunities for communication without additional infrastructure; on the other hand, it introduces intermittent connections, network partitions, and long delay, requiring sophisticated message-forwarding mechanisms to improve network performance. Therefore, socially-inspired approaches which consider network structure and personal user features have been proposed to cope with these challenges. However, many studies disregard adaptive policies of message forwarding capable of dealing with variations of these features. In this paper, we investigated message dissemination in {MSNs} considering external factors such as temperature and seasonal calendar as environmental features capable of model users'preferences and encounters. We evaluated the time of day, the day of the week, and environmental variables such as weather and geographic position as important factors to the collective behavior and spatiotemporal characteristics of urban scenarios. This paper presents an analysis of real data from weather and human mobility, which depict distinct social interactions and spatial features characterized by changes in thermal conditions. Thus, we propose a socially-aware forwarding mechanism that is adaptable to the seasonality of personal preferences. Our experiments indicated that pervasive data can provide useful information towards the design of the next generation of human-centered Opportunistic Networks.},

The popularization of portable devices such as smartphones and the worldwide adoption of social media services make it increasingly possible to be connected and share data anywhere and at any time. Data from this process represent a new source of sensing, which is called participatory sensor network (PSN). In this scenario, people participate as social sensors voluntarily providing data that capture their experiences of daily life. This large amount of social data can provide valuable new forms of information to be obtained that are currently not available within the same global reach and that can be used to improve the decision-making processes of different entities (eg, people, groups, services, and applications). The objective of this chapter is to discuss PSNs, presenting an overview of the area, challenges, and opportunities. We aim to show that PSNs (eg, Instagram, Foursquare, and Waze) can act as valuable sources of large-scale sensing, providing access to important characteristics of city dynamics and urban social behavior, more quickly and comprehensively. This chapter starts by studying the properties of PSN. Next, it discusses how to work with PSN, showing its applicability in the development of more sophisticated applications. In addition, it discusses several research challenges and opportunities in this area.},

    abstract = {Research productivity assessment is increasingly relevant for allocation of research funds. On one hand, this assessment is challenging because it involves both qualitative and quantitative analysis of several characteristics, most of them subjective in nature. On the other hand, current tools and academic social networks make bibliometric data web-available to everyone for free. Those tools, especially when combined with other data, are able to create a rich environment from which information on research productivity can be extracted. In this context, our work aims at characterizing the Brazilian Computer Science graduate programs and the relationship among themselves. We (i) present views of the programs from different perspectives, (ii) rank the programs according to each perspective and a combination of them, (iii) show correlation between assessment metrics, (iv) discuss how programs relate to another, and (v) infer aspects that boost programs' research productivity. The results indicate that programs with a higher insertion in the coauthorship network topology also possess a higher research productivity between 2004 and 2009.},

Food and drink are two of the most basic needs of human beings. However, as society evolved, food and drink became also a strong cultural aspect, being able to describe strong differences among people. Traditional methods used to analyze cross-cultural differences are mainly based on surveys and, for this reason, they are very difficult to represent a significant statistical sample at a global scale. In this paper, we propose a new methodology to identify cultural boundaries and similarities across populations at different scales based on the analysis of Foursquare check-ins. This approach might be useful not only for economic purposes, but also to support existing and novel marketing and social applications. Our methodology consists of the following steps. First, we map food and drink related check-ins extracted from Foursquare into users' cultural preferences. Second, we identify particular individual preferences, such as the taste for a certain type of food or drink, e.g., pizza or sake, as well as temporal habits, such as the time and day of the week when an individual goes to a restaurant or a bar. Third, we show how to analyze this information to assess the cultural distance between two countries, cities or even areas of a city. Fourth, we apply a simple clustering technique, using this cultural distance measure, to draw cultural boundaries across countries, cities and regions.},

    abstract = {With the recent advances in technology, we have the opportunity to study the city dynamics at a large scale. A fundamental step is to be able to sense extensive areas. Participatory sensor networks have the potential to become a very fundamental tool to study social behavior at a large scale. Currently, there are some location sharing services, such as Foursquare, that record the user's location along the time, which is clearly one of dimensions in the city dynamics. In this work, we propose a technique called city image and show its applicability taking as examples eight different cities. The resulting image is a way of summarizing the city dynamics based on transition graphs, which map the movements of individuals in a PSN.     abstract = {If a friend called you 50 times last month, how many times did you call him back? Does the answer change if we ask about SMS, or e-mails? We want to quantify reciprocity between individuals in weighted networks, and we want to discover whether it depends on their topological features (like degree, or number of common neighbors). Here we answer these questions, by studying the call- and SMS records of millions of mobile phone users from a large city, with more than 0.5 billion phone calls and 60 million SMSs, exchanged over a period of six months. Our main contributions are: (1) We propose a novel distribution, the Triple Power Law (3PL), that fits the reciprocity behavior of all 3 datasets we study, with a better fit than older competitors, (2) 3PL is parsimonious; it has only three parameters and thus avoids over-fitting, (3) 3PL can spot anomalies, and we report the most surprising ones, in our real networks, (4) We observe that the degree of reciprocity between users is correlated with their local topological features; reciprocity is higher among mutual users with larger local network overlap and greater degree similarity. {\textcopyright} 2012 Springer-Verlag.},

    abstract = {How often humans communicate with each other? What are the mechanisms that explain how human actions are distributed over time? Here we answer these questions by studying the time interval between calls and SMS messages in an anonymized, large mobile network, with 3.1 million users, over 200 million phone calls and 300 million SMS messages, spanning 70 GigaBytes. Our first contribution is the Truncated Autocatalytic Process (TAP) model, that explains the time between communication events (ie., times between phone-initiations) for a single individual. The novelty is that the model is 'autocatalytic', in the sense that the parameters of the model change, depending on the latest inter-event time: long periods of inactivity in the past result in long periods of inactivity in the future, and vice-versa. We show that the TAP model mimics the inter-event times of the users of our dataset extremely well, despite its parsimony and simplicity. Our second contribution is the TAP-classifier, a classification method based on the interevent times and in addition to other features. We showed that the inferred sleep intervals and the reciprocity between outgoing and incoming calls are good features to classify users. Finally, analyze the network effects of each class of users and we found surprising results. Moreover, all of our methods are fast, and scale linearly with the number of customers. Because of the ubiquitous use of the Internet in current society, it is easy to find groups or communities of people discussing about the most varied subjects. Learning about these subjects (or entities) from such discussions is of great interest for companies, organizations, public figures (e.g. politicians) and researchers alike. In this paper, we explore the problem of learning entity representations using online discussions about them as the only source of information. While such discussions may reveal relevant and surprising information about the corresponding subjects, they may also be completely irrelevant. As another challenge, while regular text documents usually contain a well structured language, online discussions often contain informal and mispelled words. Here we formally define the problem, propose a new benchmark for evaluating vector representation methods, and perform a deep evaluation of well-known techniques using three proposed evaluation scenarios: (i) clustering, (ii) ordering and (iii) recommendation. Results show that each method is better than at least one other in some evaluation.},

Para estudar esse problema, analisamos o potencial que coment{\'{a}}rios t{\^{e}}m para descrever s{\'{e}}ries de televis{\~{a}}o, e realizamos uma tarefa de classifica{\c{c}}{\~{a}}o de coment{\'{a}}rios a fim de identificar a qual s{\'{e}}rie e epis{\'{o}}dio ele est{\'{a}} associado.
