Java has become the language of choice in Internet programming in a very short time. The rapidity of its widespread popularity is unprecented in the programming language field. In this talk, I will review what is interesting about Java, what is new and what is borrowed from earlier languages. I will also present some sample applications of Java in my group at the Technical University of Vienna and conclude with an analysis of the language's strengths and weaknesses.
