BiographyShort BiographyNivio Ziviani has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, Canada, 1982. He is Professor Emeritus at the Department of Computer Science of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and co-founder of Kunumi. At UFMG he coordinates the Laboratory for Treating Information (LATIN). He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and of the National Order of the Scientific Merit in the classes Comendador (2007) e Gran Cruz (2018). Recent awards: Scientific Merit from the Brazilian Computer Science Society (2011), Friend of Science, Friend of FAPEMIG (2016), Good Example in Innovation from FIEMG, Dom Cabral Foundation, O Tempo and Globo Minas (2017), Gold Medal Santos Dumond given by the Governor of Minas Gerais State (2017), Honorary Chair of the 44th International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (2018). He is a co-founder of Miner Technology Group, acquired by Folha de São Paulo / UOL group in 1999, Akwan Information Technologies, acquired by Google Inc. in 2005, Neemu Technologies, acquired by Linx in 2015, and Kunumi (2016). He is author of two books in the area of algorithm design and has co-authored over 180 refereed paper in the areas of algorithm design, information retrieval and machine learning, the latter his primary area of research. He was General Co-Chair of the 28th ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval (2005) and co-founder of the International Conference on String Processing and Information Retrieval - SPIRE (1993). |
